And They’re Off...Run for the Roses — A Night at the Ketucky Derby 2010

The annual St. Mary President’s Society and Legacy Society donor recognition dinner, sponsored by Wells Fargo – The Private Bank, was off and running on the evening of November 11th as our distinguished donors, select volunteers and physicians, long-time supporters, and their guests gathered for “Run for the Roses – A Night at the Kentucky Derby.”

Brief presentations given by Sue Wert, Foundation Chair; Frank Guarrieri, Medical Center Board Chair; and Mark Nessel, Senior VP, Operations; focused on donor recognition, the state of healthcare today, and the positive impact of donor gifts in 2010. Mark introduced the film “A Story of Near Death, Resuscitation, and Hope,” a short documentary detailing St. Mary patient and donor Susan Nelson’s survival through a nearly month-long critical cardiac episode.

Foundation Board member Todd Buch led the group in a little horseplay as the evening’s gracious, impromptu Master of Ceremonies, encouraging guests to participate in two pre-recorded horse races, injecting humor into the betting, and announcing the winners.

Participants shared a few laughs over horses aptly named for St. Mary programs or equipment, such as Horse of a DaVinci Color, Cardiac Rehabarbaro, Smarty Bones, Kneebiscuit, and Somebody Call 9-1-1. Barbara Pope, Community League volunteer, took home the evening’s top prize after choosing an underdog and wisely playing the odds.
